Bird sightings on the Island of Skye and the neighbouring area

The objective of this page is to keep everyone, locals and visitors, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the case of rarer species details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Peter Stronach (  who may require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focused but some records will be included in the SOC Highland website www.highlandbirds.scot. and may also reach national sites.  We have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages and will try to avoid any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species.  It is impossible to record everything reported and for the more regularly observed species, we would encourage the use of 'Birdtrack' - http://blx1.bto.org/birdtrack.  Records sent to us are also submitted to Birdtrack.

28th Feb 2007 Parrot......yes.......Parrot! no its not yet the 1st April but report from Loraine Card of a Macaw type parrot in her garden at Kyleakin - any takers!
28th Feb 2007 Redwing View Image reports of small groups from Milovaig (AS) and Kyleakin (A&EH) - these are likely to be returning Icelandic birds which have wintered further south.
27th Feb 2007 White-tailed Eagle View Image adult feeding on a dead sheep at the mouth of the River Haultin, Kensaleyre (Gilleasbuig Ferguson)
26th Feb 2007 Pied Wagtail View Image though a few birds winter in Broadford and Portree, most of our Pied Wagtails migrate south for the winter - a single bird back singing in its territory in Elgol was earlier than usual.

22nd Feb 2007 Sparrowhawk Peter Elford & Linda Henderson had a lunch visitor at Ullinish - a Sparrowhawk which took and ate a Rock Dove - see photograph. Gives an idea of the size of prey a female Sparrowhawk can take.
21st Feb 2007 Slavonian Grebe WeBS count on greater Broadford Bay found 13, the best count for some time.
21st Feb 2007 Great Northern Diver View Image numbers beginning to build up with 39 in Loch Slapin
20th Feb 2007 Turnstone good count of 36 at Ashaig - also 38 Wigeon (A&EH)
18th Feb 2007 Greater White-fronted Goose View Image skein of 29 heading from Broadford towards Kyleakin (A&EH)
18th Feb 2007 Highland & Moray Bird Race This is the third year a team from Skye - Martin Benson, Roger Cottis, John Phillips & yours truly - has entered the race. We recorded 78 species no doubt aided by the superb weather and our best total yet. Highlights included a male Hen Harrier outside Broadford, a pair of Common Scoter off Ardnish, Iceland Gull at Portree, a Gannet off Trodday and 4 Reed Bunting at Kilmaluag.

6th Feb 2007 Skylark View Image a single Skylark does not make a spring but 26 at Drumbuie is encouraging (BN)
5th Feb 2007 White-tailed Eagle View Image an immature was spotted at An Dubh-aird, Plockton on the 5th (BN) and there was also one over Strathaird on the 6th (Drew Love-Jones). The fantastic weather at the moment is great for watching soaring Eagles.

4th Feb 2007 Yellowhammer this remains an exceptionally rare bird on Skye so two reports from Lochalsh - of 16 at Ardelve and 7 at Plockton on the 7th make us a bit jealous (BN)
2nd Feb 2007 Slavonian Grebe 2 at Ashaig as well as a single Knot, 30 Turnstone & 12 Bar-tailed Godwit (A&EH)
1st Feb 2007 Wigeon good flock of 70 at Kyle Rhea (Hugh Scott)
