Bird sightings on the Island of Skye and the neighbouring area

The objective of this page is to keep everyone, locals and visitors, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the case of rarer species details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Peter Stronach (  who may require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focused but some records will be included in the SOC Highland website www.highlandbirds.scot. and may also reach national sites.  We have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages and will try to avoid any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species.  It is impossible to record everything reported and for the more regularly observed species, we would encourage the use of 'Birdtrack' - http://blx1.bto.org/birdtrack.  Records sent to us are also submitted to Birdtrack.

Date Species Image Details
31st Jan 2006 Peregrine View Image report from Alan and Elaine Horner of bird over
Ardnish.
31st Jan 2006 Fieldfare View Image still a flock of c50 at Cill Chriosd - with a few Redwing.
31st Jan 2006 Gadwall View Image Pair still at the head of Loch Sligachan - see picture of male by Martin Benson.
31st Jan 2006 Herring Gull View Image Perhaps not the most exciting species but there are some very keen Gull enthusiasts - on a count for the BTO Winter Gull Roost there were 1200 at the roost in outer Loch Portree which is the biggest gull roost on the island.
31st Jan 2006 Song Thrush View Image a count of 15 at Dubh Aird, Plockton, was unusual.
29th Jan 2006 Mallard Mallard numbers in the area are usually relatively small so 140 at Sallochy, Loch Long is unusual.
29th Jan 2006 Greenshank report from Brian Neath of 2 at the head of Loch Long
27th Jan 2006 Jack Snipe View Image 1st report for some time - David Rogers had a single bird near Old Corry, Broadford.
27th Jan 2006 Ptarmigan View Image another report from David Rogers of a single bird near the summit of Beinn na Caillich.
26th Jan 2006 Slavonian Grebe There appear to be higher numbers this winter with a count of 14 between Camas na Sgianadin and the head of Loch Ainort - the majority in the Scalpay Narrows.
26th Jan 2006 Hen Harrier View Image Recent reports from the Lealt River, Struan and Lyndale (R.Cottis, P. Elford et al) suggest that a number of birds may be returning early to territories. The winter roost at Trotternish was down to 3 birds to-day which also supports this. Sightings of Harriers are extremely helpful towards a long term breeding study being conducted on the island by Bob - numbers appear to be increasing in the north of Skye which is very encouraging. 25th Jan 2006 Lapwing early spring returners with 5 at the head of Loch Harport at Drynoch.
25th Jan 2006 Gadwall View Image pair still at the head of Loch Sligachan along with a small group of Wigeon.
25th Jan 2006 Golden Plover Flock of 18 at 500' near the Lealt River, Trotternish (Roger Cottis).
25th Jan 2006 Fieldfare View Image Report from Alan Horner of flock of 60 near Loch Cill Chriosd.
24th Jan 2006 Wigeon good count of 95 at Kirkton Bay, Lochalsh.
24th Jan 2006 Pink-foot Goose report from Brian Neath of solitary bird along with 63 Greylags at Ardelve.
22nd Jan 2006 Little Grebe View Image super count of 7 at Eilean Tioram, Ardelve.
21st Jan 2006 Slavonian Grebe count of 4 at Camas na Sgianadin near Broadford.
21st Jan 2006 Song Thrush View Image singing bird at Corry, Broadford - the first of the year.
21st Jan 2006 Purple Sandpiper View Image 4 at Ardnish, Broadford.
21st Jan 2006 Mute Swan View Image Although not seen since the last report on the 12th - Roger and Pat Cottis report probably the same pair back at Camus Croise, Isle Ornsay.
21st Jan 2006 Teal View Image Good count of 40 at Reraig, Lochalsh.
21st Jan 2006 Red-throated Diver View Image count of 6 at Plock of Kyle/Eilean a'Mhal is unusual (Brian Neath)
21st Jan 2006 Purple Sandpiper View Image Excellent count of 20 at Plock of Kyle/Eilean a 'Mhal, Lochalsh.
20th Jan 2006 Lapwing 2 at Loch Cill Chriosd had also been about on the 14th (A. Horner)
14th Jan 2006 Ptarmigan View Image reports of this species are particularly sparse so a small group of 3 found by David Rogers on Beinn na Caillich was encouraging.
12th Jan 2006 Mute Swan View Image Not as scarce as a Bittern but on the basis of the known records this is the first report for 25 years! Roger and Pat Cottis report a pair at Isle Ornsay following a south westerly gale.
7th Jan 2006 Lapwing Report from Alan Horner of 2 at Ashaig - very early returners.
5th Jan 2006 Bittern View Image (As Bob has been on holiday my apologies for the delay in reporting this!) Report from Andrew Peters of a Bittern found at South Cuil, Uig - this is a tremendous record and a first for Skye. The bird was in poor condition and apparently exhausted. It was therefore caught for its own safety and after several days care and recuperation with Pierce-O'Conner, Veterinary Surgeons, Skeabost Bridge,(see photograph), the bird was fit enough to travel by 'RSPB mail' and was released at their reserve at Loch of Strathbeg. It appears that the bird may have been in the area for a week or so and was obviously struggling to survive in what was fairly unsuitable habitat. Yet another example of how the unusual can turn up on the island.
3rd Jan 2006 Black-throated Diver View Image total of 12 in Loch Slapin opposite Glasnakille.
3rd Jan 2006 Red-throated Diver View Image Count of 11 between Lusa and the Skye Bridge - an unusually high number in this area.
