Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

DATE SPECIES IMAGE DETAILS
31st August 2007 Little Grebe click for image single back on the sea at Balmeanach Bay, Braes (Wm Marshall)
28th August 2007 Corncrake click for image the 'crex' season on Skye has come to an end with the report from Alan Sillence that there were 18-19 calling birds during the survey period, again mainly from the Waternish/Trotternish area with a few reports from elsewhere. Numbers are therefore still below their peak of two years ago so this remains an extremely scarce breeding bird. Alan is extremely grateful to everyone who passed on records - if anyone out there has any records which did not go into the system its never too late!
27th August 2007 Sabine's Gull report on 'BirdGuides' site of single 6kms east of Staffin Island - also 2 Sooty Shearwater and 30 Storm Petrels - an offshore boat trip is obviously picking up some nice birds!

This is a rarity which will need to go through the Highland Record Committee but if accepted will be the first record for Skye.

19th August 2007 Lapwing click for image re the previous report of 5/8 the three Lapwing chicks at Suardal in Strath have now fledged!

13th August 2007 Bird Atlas 2007-11 Many of you know that I am the local organiser for the BTO and have now taken on the role as Atlas Co-ordinator for Skye. This is an ambitious project and we will need help in every 10km square in the country although my own particular needs are for Skye. For the first time a Winter Atlas and a Breeding Atlas will run in tandem the idea being to map the distribution of all species. There are different ways to get involved either through the submission of 'roving records' when you are out birdwatching or through 'timed counts' in tetrads within a 10km square. Either way, help will be required on Skye and I will be dropping an e.mail to many of you directly. The hope is to set up a couple of meetings within the next few months or to speak to people individually. If you wish to know more do not hesitate to contact me or visit www.birdatlas.net. (Bob)

9th August 2007 Red Kite click for image report from Steve Heap of two birds over Teangue, Sleat, in the early evening. These reports are always extremely interesting and seem to be increasing. Steve was unable to say if the birds were tagged but it is likely that they are birds dispersing from the Black Isle area. By dispersing west their chances of survival will probably increase as unfortunately many Black Isle birds are poisoned as they disperse southwards through 'black holes' in the Findhorn Valley.
8th August 2007 Long-eared Owl reports of this species are extremely rare on Skye so a report of a resident pair near Uig is extremely encouraging (RBrooks)
7th August 2007 Linnet max of 30 with flocks of 22 and 8 at Ashaig, Broadford - not a common species on Skye so these are possibly migrants (RMcM)

7th August 2007 Mute Swan click for image pair still at Shiel Bridge, Lochalsh (BN)

5th August 2007 Lapwing click for image c24 on the improved pasture east of Loch Cill Chriosd, Strathaird some of which were possibly passage birds. More significant however was an adult with a brood of 3 well grown young - which probably deserves a medal for perseverance after several failures.
5th August 2007 Whimbrel click for image excellent count of 32 in Broadford Bay - also 8 Sanderling (MB)
4th August 2007 Whimbrel click for image sightings in Broadford Bay are sometimes related to bad weather when migrating birds are temporarily held up - to-day was such a day with 27+ Whimbrel an excellent count (MB)
4th August 2007 Sanderling click for image 14 at Broadford Bay is another good count - also 28 Dunlin & a single Black-tailed Godwit (MB)
