Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

3rd August 2005 Golden Eagle click for image The Golden Eagle population on Skye is monitored annually by Ken Crane and Kate Nellist. During the course of 2005, 34 Golden Eagle home ranges were checked on Skye and Raasay of which 31 held territorial pairs. At least 19 pairs either failed in their breeding attempt or simply did not nest. The remaining 12 pairs bred successfully each producing a single fledged young. This is poor productivity, well below average, but is probably due to bad weather in winter and late spring. This is the first occasion that 'surplus' birds could not be sent to the Irish Golden Eagle Reintroduction Programme.
3rd August 2005 Nightjar Report from Mark Spencer Ellis of a female, with a recently broken wing, found beside the road near Kylerhea. Whilst there have been reports of churring birds during the last few years these have never been confirmed. Sadly it appears that this bird has been the victim of a car strike. However it appears to be the first confirmed record for Skye in over 100 years.
1st August 2005 Arctic Skua click for image Max count of 4 in Broadford Bay giving stick to Common Terns which seem to be nesting in good numbers on Pabay.
