Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

11th July 2008 Greenshank click for image breeding waders are scarce on Skye but Greenshank seem to do well - in an area of forestry and moorland west of Bernisdale at least 4 pairs have been successful and 4 fledged young were on the wing at one site to-day. Territorial birds have also been noted in the Greshornish area which is probably range expansion. (RMcM)

7th July 2008 Short-eared Owl click for image report from Alex Turner of a pair with at least one fledged young at Bernisdale - this is a scarce breeding species on Skye.
7th July 2008 Siskin Many observers have commented on the large numbers of Siskins in gardens - Alan Mearns from Waternish was able to read some ring numbers on birds visiting his feeders on 25.5.08. One of the birds, a 2nd year male had been ringed 3 months earlier at Aberfoyle in Perthshire. The other had been ringed on 11.2.2006 at Highley in Shropshire. The scientific benefits of digital photography strike again!!

5th July 2008 Greylag Goose click for image a little advance warning that there is to be a Scottish Greylag Goose Survey during the last three weeks of August - specifically to record summering birds in areas to the north and west of the Great Glen. All counts are welcome at this time and in the lead up to it. Forms can be provided by contacting the site. (Bob)
4th July 2008 Seabirds we had an SWT walk to Rubha Hunish to-day. Whilst Shag and Fulmar numbers appeared to be reasonable, there was a noticeable decline in Common Guillemot, Razorbill and Kittiwake. Also seen were Black Guillemot, Puffin and a pair of Great Skua. Up to 4/5 Minke Whale put on a terrific show in the afternoon sun.
4th July 2008 Barnacle Goose click for image report from Al Mearns of 3 birds on Clett which is interesting in itself - moreso however was a massive count of 248 Geese (probably Greylags) between Mingay, Clett and Waternish.

2nd July 2008 Rose coloured Starling an adult for 2 days at Treetops, Strollamus - apparently very confiding (per Mr&Mrs Willett)
