Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

26th June 2007 Short-eared Owl click for image report from Carole Millington of a pair with at least one fledged chick at Ose - this is the first proved breeding of this species on Skye for some time. At present there may be several pairs attempting to breed as there have been increased reports and it may be a good vole year - see Gallery.

25th June 2007 Arctic Tern estimate 50-70 pairs breeding on Lampay, Claigan (Alan Harris)
24th June 2007 Kittiwake click for image report from Andy Stables of large flock of c1000 along with c500 auks feeding in Loch Pooltiel - presumably on a large shoal of fish - ther have been reports from fishermen of huge shoals of sprats/small herring which are attracting Common Dolphins and Minke Whale as well as birds.
24th June 2007 Tufted Duck drake on Loch More, Waterstein (Alan Harris)
24th June 2007 Arctic Skua click for image 3 at Neist Point and 3 at Lampay, Claigan on the 25th (Alan Harris)

22nd June 2007 Grasshopper Warbler click for image reeling bird at Faoilean, Strathaird (DMonks)
21st June 2007 Mute Swan click for image outside visitors to this site may be surprised by some of the apparent rarities which are posted but Mute Swan is one of them - there is a adult pair in Loch Duich the first time Brian Neath has ever recorded two adults in Lochalsh.
21st June 2007 Goosander click for image 10 on Shiel Saltings, Lochalsh (BN)
21st June 2007 Seabirds a visit to Rubha Hunish provided a local snapshot of current seabird problems - whilst there were Kittiwakes on nests there was little sign of young and overall numbers seemed down; there were few incubating Razorbills (see Gallery image) and Common Guillemots seemed notably scarce; Shag seemed to be doing ok. On a recent visit to Neist Point Andy Stables found a lot of young Kittiwakes in the area so some sites may be performing well.
19th June 2007 Siskin party of 20+ in the Allt Ruaridh plantation near Balmeanach consisting of many young birds.
19th June 2007 Common Crossbill click for image group of 9 in the Allt Ruaridh plantation near Balmeanach

15th June 2007 Linnet Pair on shore at Dunvegan (AMearns)
15th June 2007 Turtle Dove click for image report of a single bird with Collared Dove in the garden at Balgowan, Struan (John Marchington)
14th June 2007 White-tailed Eagle click for image the gregarious nature of this bird was evident to-day when I came across a sheep carcase near the Ose River at Balmeanach - as well as disturbing 15-20 Ravens there were 4 White-tailed Eagles, 2 yellow tagged (2006) and 2 red tagged (2005) which is a good reflection on the young birds in the population - later there was also an adult passing through the area. (Bob)
14th June 2007 Short-eared Owl click for image report from Gilleasbuig Ferguson os a single near Hungladder in the Kilmuir area.
13th June 2007 Great Skua click for image up to four birds around Loch Bracadale on successive days with a pair taking particular interest in Wiay (DRitchie) - again reflecting continued territorial expansion though there are few birds breeding.
11th June 2007 Great Skua click for image single flying over the old road between Lusa and Kyleakin (A&EH)
11th June 2007 Greylag Goose click for image flock of c50 at Coral Beaches, Dunvegan (C&HGodfrey)

9th June 2007 Great Skua click for image still a pair at Rubha Hunish (Jean Thomas) - it would be good to get another breeding record for Skye.
9th June 2007 White-tailed Eagle click for image report from Jenny Duffill of a single over the Ramasaig cliffs being worried by a gull.
8th June 2007 Quail further report that Quail is still calling at Linicro - was heard in the middle of the day from the Mongstadt road at NG385674 (Josh Jones)
7th June 2007 Bar-tailed Godwit click for image 3 at Ashaig (A&EH)
7th June 2007 Golden Plover click for image report from Rob Forrest of successful breeding in Waternish - adult seen with chick - breeding reports are few and far between.
6th June 2007 Ring Ouzel click for image report of a single bird on Bla Bheinn (Adam Fraser)
5th June 2007 Garden Warbler single in garden at Aird Bernisdale (C&HGodfrey)
2nd June 2007 Dotterel click for image there is no breeding record for Dotterel on Skye although the species has been recorded occasionally in recent years. The chance discovery of an incubating bird (see image) is therefore extremely exciting - details of the location are being withheld meantime.(Aaron Howard & Becky Boulter)
1st June 2007 Arctic Skua click for image single dark phase bird of Ullinish Point (GLeatherbarrow)
1st June 2007 Hen Harrier click for image many observers are kind enough to send in Hen Harrier records which are rarely published because they are invariably in my breeding study area - for information I have located 8 nests and probably have 10-12 pairs overall - this includes 5 pairs in an area of 3 sq kms, an extremely high density - many thanks for the records and keep them coming in (Bob)
