Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

This is the first record since one turned up at Borve in 2003, and seems typical of a spring migrant which has overflown north by some considerable distance.

(RMcM) (This was on JMT land in a plantation where tree felling was in full swing - sometimes wonder how much wildlife is destroyed by these operations which proceed without respite throughout the breeding season)

21st April 2008 Great Skua click for image one back in territory on Staffin Island (M.Perry) - we have an increasing number of summering birds and it would be good to confirm breeding on a number of sites.

19th April 2008 'Garden Birds' we reported on the Red-throated Diver in Ob Breakish at the bottom of the Phillips's garden and just to say the bird is still there, feeding on small trout, and is extremely confiding. A photograph taken by young Robert Phillips is in the Gallery. The pair of Snow Buntings at Elgol are still about spending most of their time feeding on the garden and resting on the roof. It can only be assumed that the cold weather has stifled any migratory urge.

15th April 2008 Hen Harrier click for image report of a male at Ullinish at 8.0pm (Graham Leatherbarrow) and possibly the same bird seen by Les Millington at Ose at 8.30pm. Sightings of Hen Harriers are always welcome as they help piece to-gether territories for the ongoing breeding study by RMcM.
15th April 2008 Merlin click for image several birds are now being reported in breeding territories and a male at Waternish to-day was possibly a migrant as it was flying directly north and through the area. There is a Merlin national breeding census this year so all observations are welcome.
14th April 2008 Snow Bunting click for image a wee update on Bob's Buntings at Elgol - the male and female remained with us until the 11th when the male disappeared - however the female remained with us again spending time feeding around the house and resting on the roof - we thought we had lost the male but he is now back again (see updated shots in Gallery)
14th April 2008 Willow Warbler click for image single at Lower Milovaig early morning (AS)
14th April 2008 Red-throated Diver click for image single found by John Phillips in Ob Breakish which appears to be a young first summer bird, quite tame and feeding below the small waterfall in the burn which leads to the Ob - photographed catching a small trout. This may be the same bird photographed recently at Lusa by Alan Horner. Such confiding behaviour is unusual - see images in Gallery.
14th April 2008 Chiffchaff click for image two singing on Carr Brae, Lochalsh (BN)
