Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

28th February 2007 Parrot......yes.......Parrot! no its not yet the 1st April but report from Loraine Card of a Macaw type parrot in her garden at Kyleakin - any takers!
28th February 2007 Redwing click for image reports of small groups from Milovaig (AS) and Kyleakin (A&EH) - these are likely to be returning Icelandic birds which have wintered further south.
27th February 2007 White-tailed Eagle click for image adult feeding on a dead sheep at the mouth of the River Haultin, Kensaleyre (Gilleasbuig Ferguson)
26th February 2007 Pied Wagtail click for image though a few birds winter in Broadford and Portree, most of our Pied Wagtails migrate south for the winter - a single bird back singing in its territory in Elgol was earlier than usual.

22nd February 2007 Sparrowhawk click for image Peter Elford & Linda Henderson had a lunch visitor at Ullinish - a Sparrowhawk which took and ate a Rock Dove - see photograph. Gives an idea of the size of prey a female Sparrowhawk can take.
21st February 2007 Slavonian Grebe click for image WeBS count on greater Broadford Bay found 13, the best count for some time.
21st February 2007 Great Northern Diver click for image numbers beginning to build up with 39 in Loch Slapin

18th February 2007 Greater White-fronted Goose click for image skein of 29 heading from Broadford towards Kyleakin (A&EH)
18th February 2007 Highland & Moray Bird Race This is the third year a team from Skye - Martin Benson, Roger Cottis, John Phillips & yours truly - has entered the race. We recorded 78 species no doubt aided by the superb weather and our best total yet. Highlights included a male Hen Harrier outside Broadford, a pair of Common Scoter off Ardnish, Iceland Gull at Portree, a Gannet off Trodday and 4 Reed Bunting at Kilmaluag.

7th February 2007 Red-throated Diver click for image good count of 15 between Camus a Mhor and the Sound of Raasay, Braes, suggesting numbers are starting to build up (Bill Marshall)

6th February 2007 Skylark click for image a single Skylark does not make a spring but 26 at Drumbuie is encouraging (BN)
5th February 2007 White-tailed Eagle click for image an immature was spotted at An Dubh-aird, Plockton on the 5th (BN) and there was also one over Strathaird on the 6th (Drew Love-Jones). The fantastic weather at the moment is great for watching soaring Eagles.

4th February 2007 Yellowhammer this remains an exceptionally rare bird on Skye so two reports from Lochalsh - of 16 at Ardelve and 7 at Plockton on the 7th make us a bit jealous (BN)
