The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

This has been a scarce species this winter so a report from Brian Neath of a possible 3rd winter bird at Eilean Donan, Dornie, is very welcome. |

White-tailed Eagle
For confidentiality reasons we tend not to mention many sightings of Sea Eagles but highlight marked juveniles or other unusual records. However to-day was an exceptional day weather wise and I watched a total of 7 white-tails thermalling to c3000' from Beinn Uigshader south of Edinbane. This web site has avoided making comment on the local windfarm debate which unfortunately is not always terribly well informed and has suffered as a result of poor quality Environmental Impact Assessments. RMcM has expressed his concerns elsewhere about developments in this area and the potential risks to Golden and White-tailed Eagle populations. In 6 years of watching raptors on Skye this is the largest count of White-tailed Eagles I have seen - slap bang in the middle of a probable windfarm site! |

Highland and Moray Bird Race
A local team comprising Brian Neath, Roger Cottis, Martin Benson, John Phillips and 'yours truly' participated in the bird race yesterday restricting our activities to Skye. This is a sponsored event with funds partly going to SWT. We recorded 75 species (3 more than last year). Highlights included a Great Spotted Woodpecker at Ord, Jack Snipe, Grey Plover and Purple Sandpiper Sandpiper at Ardnish, and the wintering pair of Gadwall at Sligachan. The superb weather also brought out two separate pairs of Golden Eagles. Any post-event sponsorship would be most welcome. |

Report from Sylvia Porter of a sub-adult bird (Red S) at Waternish Point - it now appears that this is one of the Mull chicks "Itchy" or "Scratchy" which featured in Simon King's televised broadcasts last year - it is not unusual for young birds to range extensively in their first year. |
