The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

Weather related records

South Skye had probably had its biggest fall of snow for many years. Look out for Snow Buntings forced on to low ground and feeding on exposed grass seed heads, there was a female at the roadside in Strathaird. Woodcock have also been forced out to feed and there was one in our garden at Elgol as well as two by the roadside near Torrin. |

Unusual Garden Bird Records
|
|
The exceptionally bad weather has brought a number of unusual reports including a Brambling on nuts at Ose, Goldfinches on nuts in Elgol, as well as Snipe and Skylarks in gardens. In Lochalsh there have been reports of Woodcock and Redwing. As well as our wintering birds many returning breeders such as Skylarks, Pied Wagtails and Song Thrushes will be finding it pretty hard over the next few days so try and put out some extra food. Please let the site know of any unusual records in your garden. |

Whimbrel

Wintering bird at Camusunary, Loch Scavaig - it is paired up with a Curlew and was recorded in November and December 2003. There are many more sheltered places than Camusunary and like the locals (Bob included), it has endured horrendous weather over the last few weeks including 80 m.p.h. gales. Surely the weather in Africa would have been better! |
