Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

30th December 2005 Little Auk Report from Tim Dix of total of 5 birds in outer Loch Snizort - seen from the ferry - this is the first report of the winter since a dead bird was found at Ashaig at the end of November.

28th December 2005 Gadwall click for image pair feeding on the tidal edge at the top of Loch Sligachan - this is an unusual record for Skye especially in midwinter.
27th December 2005 Little Egret click for image Excellent find by Graham Leatherbarrow at the Drynoch salt marshes this morning - this would be the third record for Skye. The photograph was taken on the Uists about 6 weeks ago and there is just a possibility it could be the same bird.

5th December 2005 Water Rail First report for the winter with a sighting at Harrapool - a scarce species on Skye with only a few reports each winter.

3rd December 2005 Blackcap click for image Martin Benson had 3 females and a male near the Cuillin Hills Hotel, Portree - yet another indication of what has been an astonishing autumn for this species.
3rd December 2005 Kingfisher an extremely good record for the west - Brian and Julie Neath had what was identified as a female in Strathcarron, near the junction of the A890/A896.
