Bird sightings on the Island of Skye

The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

8th January 2008 Skye-Birds Records 2007 The year 2007 was exceptional in terms of the numbers and quality of records submitted and these have now been compiled into a report which is sent to the Highland Recorder for inclusion in the Highland Bird Report. It is impossible to include all of the many hundreds of records forwarded but it may be of interest that 170 different species were recorded. Black Swan, albeit an escapee, was recorded for the first time. Other rare species of note included Velvet Scoter, Turtle Dove, Lesser Whitethroat, Curlew Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Little Gull and Sabine's Gull. There was a calling Quail in Trotternish and the breeding highlight was the discovery of a Dotterel nest, a first for Skye and the furthest west the species has been known to breed in Scotland. The recent Kumlien's Gull would also be a first if accepted, but it is a hybrid and not regarded as a separate species from Iceland Gull. If anyone would like a copy of this report please e.mail me and I will forward it as an attachment. Thanks again to everyone for forwarding records which is contributing significantly to our knowledge of the area.
