The objective of these pages is to keep everyone, locals and visitors alike, up to date with what birds are about. It is therefore dependent on everyone contacting me as quickly as possible to ensure I can update the site so that others might benefit from the observations. In the event of rarities being found, details could be passed on to other website networks. Details would also be passed on the Highland Recorder Al McNee who might require a full description before the record was accepted. This website will very much be locally focussed but recognises the existing requirements of the SOC local recorder system and other networks such as Birdline Scotland . The intention is that Skye-Birds.com will enhance these systems. Skye-Birds.com will also have complete discretion as to what information is added to these pages. In particular, any details which might reveal breeding sites of vulnerable species will be excluded. No information will be published which may in any way put birds at risk.

Herring Gull
Perhaps not the most exciting species but there are some very keen Gull enthusiasts - on a count for the BTO Winter Gull Roost there were 1200 at the roost in outer Loch Portree which is the biggest gull roost on the island. |

Hen Harrier
Recent reports from the Lealt River, Struan and Lyndale (R.Cottis, P. Elford et al) suggest that a number of birds may be returning early to territories. The winter roost at Trotternish was down to 3 birds to-day which also supports this. Sightings of Harriers are extremely helpful towards a long term breeding study being conducted on the island by Bob - numbers appear to be increasing in the north of Skye which is very encouraging. Please click on the image for a photograph taken by David Whitaker at a Skye nest in 2005. |

Bittern
(As Bob has been on holiday my apologies for the delay in reporting this!) Report from Andrew Peters of a Bittern found at South Cuil, Uig - this is a tremendous record and a first for Skye. The bird was in poor condition and apparently exhausted. It was therefore caught for its own safety and after several days care and recuperation with Pierce-O'Conner, Veterinary Surgeons, Skeabost Bridge,(see photograph), the bird was fit enough to travel by 'RSPB mail' and was released at their reserve at Loch of Strathbeg. It appears that the bird may have been in the area for a week or so and was obviously struggling to survive in what was fairly unsuitable habitat. Yet another example of how the unusual can turn up on the island. |
